Copious rains during the past couple of weeks has increased the flow of water in the Krishna and Godavari rivers as rivulets, canals and streams are in full spate in Karnataka and Maharashtra. The Srisailam project is expected to get inflows on Friday as Jurala has been receiving floodwater since Thursday. Moreover, the Srisailam project is already receiving modest inflows of 4,700 cusecs from upstream canals.

This is bringing cheer to farmers in the Krishna basin in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. Over five lakh acres are irrigated under the Jurala project.

On the other side, the Godavari river has been flowing fully as over four lakh cusecs of water is being released into the sea at Sri Arthur Cotton barrage at Rajamahendravaram in AP.

With the area of low pressure over the northwest Bay of Bengal continuing, the Meteorological department forecasts light to moderate rains or thundershowers at many places in Telangana.

With over 65,000 cusecs of inflows reaching the first project on the Krishna in Telangana, the Jurala project and its instant outflows are over 29,495 cusecs as on Thursday evening.

From Jurala, water has to flow about 170 km to reach Srisailam. Officials expect inflows at Srisailam from Friday onwards.

Over 1.47 lakh cusecs was released from Narayanpur project on Tuesday midnight.

The Almatti and Narayanpur projects in Karnataka are almost full. The water level at Almatti is 1702 feet as against the total level of 1705 feet. Full reservoir level (FRL) of Almatti is 129.72 tmc; currently the level is 113.4tmc. Instant inflows and outflows at Almatti are the same – 162,093 cusecs.

The Tungabhadra project in Karnataka had 93.3 tmc water on Thursday morning as against its full capacity of 100.86 tmc. Twenty spillway gates were lifted releasing 34,728 cusecs downstream and 4,368 cusecs into canals.
